Alio's Tips

Take time out to discover this beautiful island on your own. Barbados is one of the safest islands in the Caribbean, so venturing out on your own should be at the top of your list.

Public transportation, which runs regularly along the south and west coast of the island, helps you come into contact with the locals and discover the true jewels of this magnificent island: its people.

If the bus isn't your cup of tea, rent a scooter, mini moke or even a conventional car and go in search of Barbados' many natural treasures: the spectacular Botanical Gardens, Harrison's Cave (an underground cave with bubbling streams, thundering waterfalls and deep pools) or even visit a Rum Plantation.

Our last suggestion is a local secret: the town of Oinstins. Oistins, in the parish of Christ Church, is a major fishing community in Barbados with a modern fish market and also one of the hottest attractions in Barbados! Each Friday and Saturday night hundreds of locals and visitors flock to Oistins for the Fish-Fry, an opportunity to enjoy the very best local food - fried and grilled fish, fish cakes, sweet potato, macaroni pie, and coleslaw and so much more. There are numerous vendors to choose from and seating is readily available. The sounds of island music fill the air, making for a memorable evening out in a very casual setting! An experience not to be missed!

Dining

Barbados has earned high marks among well-travelled diners, offering an impressive range of regional and international cuisines to delight your palate. Fine dining ranges from gourmet ocean-front restaurants to authentic island “eateries,” and for a culinary world just beyond your imagination, choose from majestic great houses or festive downtown dining.

Recognition of the quality of dining found in Barbados was confirmed when the Zagat family, printed a Zagat Barbados Restaurant guide in late 2006, making Barbados the first Caribbean island to have such a guide.

Calendar of Events

* Barbados Jazz Festival - 7 day event held every January. Growing in size and popularity, this festival has featured international jazz stars such as Patti LaBelle, Kenny G, Luther Vandross, Ray Charles, George Benson, Gladys Knight, Roberta Flack and many more.

* Crop-over - is the biggest festival in Barbados and lasts for three weeks in July and August. Historically the time for celebrating the sugar cane harvest, the festival culminates in a grand finale on the first Monday in August, the Kadooment, which highlights a parade of costumed bands.
